To Stay Or Not To Stay @Home

This is the question made by several Portuguese in these crazy times. But the truth is that if we don't leave our houses, afraid of dying, we will surely die of hunger, because the economic consequences are already being felt and we still don't know what will truly happen.

The consequences are visible in our profession. Offices without clients, lawyers at home waiting for work, large firms that received millions, but now don’t have money to pay workers, clients that don’t want to invest, clients who cannot pay, clients who need help but who are afraid to go to the offices and don’t know how to use digital services...

The world has indeed changed, but it will change much more if this feeling of closure at home continues. Especially when it is a partial closure. Many of the people who refuse to go back to work, go on picnics, for a walk, to the beaches… If the streets are empty, the gardens are full. Just like the beaches.

But this self-forced containment is causing the economy to collapse. We have to do what we did before. Urgently and with due precautions. We have to go back to work, restaurants, stores, or commercial spaces. We have to help all types of service. We have to recover what we had. With safety.

Otherwise, the queues that are already starting to increase at the gates of charities will still be longer.

Many cannot return to what they had. Because they were dismissed, because their jobs disappeared, or because they had no work before and, now, they get nothing. Or just because they belong to a risk group.

But all those who can, must return. So, answering the question asked daily – should we stay or not at home? - the answer should be clear. Obeying all the rules imposed by the local authorities, and always guaranteeing our safety, we should leave our home and make our best to return to a possible normality. This situation can take time, and we cannot all wait indefinitely for something that may not arrive soon.
