Andrew Firman and Matthew Doorbar represented Carter Lemon Camerons LLP at a legal focus group on Drone Technology, Misuse and Harms co-designed and co-hosted by Dr Anna Jackman (University of Reading) and Louise Hooper (Barrister at Garden Court Chambers) in Manchester, and in support of Dr Jackman’s ESRC-funded Diversifying Drone Stories research project.

One of the primary concerns discussed during the focus group was the issue of privacy. Drones equipped with cameras have the potential to invade the privacy of individuals and businesses. As a result, there is a growing need for regulations that protect the privacy of individuals and businesses from drone surveillance. 
 

Another area of concern is the potential for drones to cause harm to people or property. Drones can crash or malfunction, and if they are not operated safely, they can cause significant damage. In order to minimise the risks associated with drone operation, it is important to have a clear understanding of the regulations in place that dictate where drones can be flown and under what conditions.

The group also discussed the potential economic benefits of drones. Drones can be used for a variety of purposes, including surveying land, monitoring crops, and inspecting infrastructure. They can also be used to deliver packages, with current plans by the Unmanned Traffic Management company Altitude Angel to build a ‘Drone Superhighway’ in the south of England which could revolutionise the way that goods are transported. However, in order to fully realise these benefits, there needs to be a regulatory framework that allows for safe and responsible drone operation and it’s essential that companies are aware of their rights and obligations.
